History

In 1994 The New Garrett Theatre was founded by Wit Hadley and Karl and Yvonne Gerrard
with the name being taken from its first home Garrett Hall School where we first performed.
The theatre group was formed to bring quality entertainment to the area and to this day has
the intention to be “an amateur theatre company with professional standards”.

Advertisements were placed in local newspapers for new members to come along and be
part of The New Garrett Theatre family, whether it be participating on-stage or off-stage,
front of house or behind the scenes. The advertisements had an overwhelming response
leading to the first production “Half of Everything” which ran from the 10th to the 13 th August
1994.

In the space of fourteen months, The New Garrett Theatre had staged three productions
and the audience continued to grow. As all productions were self-funded and all profits
went back into the theatre company, they were self-sustainable being able to invest in
state-of-the-art sound equipment which is still a continuing project to this day. However,
due to the success of the theatre, it was time to find a new larger venue to accommodate
the growing audience and cast, therefore in 1995 The New Garrett Theatre found their new
home, Formby Hall in Atherton, and staged shows there for the next twenty years.
By 1999 a democratic committee was formed which still remains to this day – although as
the years have passed a few members have changed!

As Formby Hall sadly closed in 2015, The New Garrett Theatre was forced to relocate.
Working closely with the local community a new venue was found, Atherton Community
School (now known as Atherton High School). The first production at their new home was a
family pantomime “Snow White and the Magnificent Seven Dwarves” which was produced
in 2016. Over the years TNGT has staged many productions here including 9 to 5 and
Legally Blonde.

More recently productions have been held at St. Mary’s Catholic High School which is
another fantastic venue. In 2023 The New Garrett Theatre was awarded “Best Musical” by
NODA North West – District 5 for “Bad Girls: The Musical” and in 2024 were awarded “Best
Staging” and “Best Choreographers” for “Betty Blue Eyes.”
The New Garrett Theatre currently has over fifty members and has performed over 60
productions to date consisting of pantomimes, musicals, and revues.
